Dozens if not hundreds of companies are currently racing to stake their claim in the quickly evolving eVTOL space. Only a few are worth paying attention to… I think I found one of them.
(NOTE: this is #NOTanAD - I'm legit excited to be apart of sharing this story)
What’s coming in this new “powered lift” side of aerospace is incredible; I couldn't have imagined I'd get to explore and share this when I started Flight Chops!
Last week I visited Beta Technologies; It blew my mind to learn how many of the key engineers and pilots knew the Flight Chops channel. We had fun reminiscing about aspects of various episodes they could relate to.
I saw behind the curtain, and received training that I can’t wait to share.
On top of their main projects, there’s a fleet of general aviation aircraft that would be the envy of a pilot in any niche within aviation... from the classic Stearman to several vintage and modern tailwheel cub types, to an Extra300L, fully electric Pipistrel trainers (one of which I got to fly :) Cabri G2 helicopters, and even a Russian Antonov An-2… ALL the employees are encouraged to train and fly as much as they can – the culture is clearly that of aviators building the new chapter of aviation.
The second morning, I was up before dawn to attend the briefing, and then at sunrise found myself onboard an A-Star helicopter flying chase for an early test flight of Beta’s production-intent version of ALIA CTOL.
What I saw was a very capable airframe (that has already flown tens of thousands of miles, to many airports away from home base). It is important to note this was NOT a prototype or “proof of concept” aircraft. ALIA was built on Beta’s scaled production line.
Probably the coolest thing I noticed about ALIA was the pilot centric design. The flight deck is set up with a G3000 Prime avionics suite and full dual controls for 2 crew operations as well as training. This is not something I’ve seen in any other eVTOL designs.
Lot’s more great stuff is coming as I edit what I’ve already captured, and film more in the near future!
Please share any questions about this new chapter of aviation, and stay tuned if you’re interested in learning more!
