An interview with Lucy May Constantini (PhD Candidate, Open University) to discuss her research on this topic, "Malabar Martial Arts and Medicine: an examination of healing practices in kaḷarippayarr and their relationship with Yoga and Ayurveda."
We discuss, amongst of things:
• What is kaḷarippayaṟṟ˘ and how does it relate to health and healing?
• How does kaḷarippayaṟṟ˘ relate to yoga and āyurveda as traditions?
• Has kaḷarippayaṟṟ˘ changed in the context of colonialism/post-colonial modernity?
UNTANGLING TRADITIONS | Yoga, Ayurveda, and Alchemy
Since 2015, the AyurYog project has been researching the histories of yoga, Ayurveda and Indian alchemy. Our goal has been to reveal the entanglements of these historical traditions, and to trace the trajectories of their evolution as components of today's global healthcare and personal development industries. Drawing upon the primary historical sources of each respective tradition as well as on fieldwork data, we have explored their shared terminology, practical applications and discourses, tracing how past encounters and cross-fertilizations have informed and shaped the disciplines over time.
UNTANGLING TRADITIONS is an online conference, where we will present our research questions and discuss how we arrived at our results; we will talk about what didn’t go as planned and how solutions were found; we will showcase our collaborations with other research projects, scholars and practitioners; and we will discuss where we go from here.
This project was made possible through funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research
and innovation program under grant agreement No.639363.
