A cover of Underneath The Rotting Pizza, from the video game Final Fantasy VII.
I definitely fell in love with this track, in both the original FF7 and Remake! It definitely captures the vibe of the lower level of Midgar, it has a super nice groove, and also the name of the song is just so good, describing the upper level as a 'rotting pizza'.
The song is quite repetitive so I definitely wanted to play around with it, however it was also quite difficult to add parts that take away from the vibe. My first approach to changing it up was using 8 string guitars in Drop E so it's super low, but not quite exactly djent.
The solo section was probably one of the most difficult sections to arrange; I feel like the song needed a solo section but I was struggling to come up with some ideas, and went through a few iterations and how to lay out that section. I ended up with the idea to trade solos between keyboard and guitar, and started with the keyboard solos. I was struggling with guitar solo ideas, but I decided to do the keys first, so I had something to bounce off and come up with something a little different compared to my usual style. The solos were semi improvised too, just did a few takes as opposed to sitting down and writing them out in advance, and then just re did them more cleanly.
It's definitely been nice to make a cover that's a little different to my usual style, and hopefully you enjoyed it too!
