Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has now made it Ukraine's stance that the Kuril Islands belong to Japan, and Russia is Illegally occupying them.
The Soviet Union at the end of WW2 had invaded the Kuril Islands in the last month of the conflict. Japan has said they are their territory since then.
