The Kiheitai were Japan's first modern soldiers. From modern guerilla tactics from the west, western uniforms, modern rifles, and being a mixed class volunteer militia these men were able to outclass most units they came against on the battlefield. Their success was a major influence on the early Imperial Japanese Army during the Boshin War and after.
