Importance of Van der Waals Forces
Van der Waals forces are critical for the condensation of gases, the behavior of nonpolar substances, and interactions in biological membranes.
Van der Waals Forces
Temporary dipoles cause weak attractions between molecules.
Weak and short-lived, but important in large biomolecules.
Example: Geckos sticking to walls!
There are Three Subcategories..
Hydrogen Bonds
London Dispersion
Dipole-Dipole
Hydrogen Bonds
Attraction between a hydrogen atom bonded to a highly electronegative atom (like N, O, or F) and another electronegative atom.
Weaker than covalent or ionic bonds, but critical for biological structures.
Example: Between water molecules, holding DNA strands together.
Hydrogen Bonds Properties
Weaker than ionic or covalent bonds but stronger than other intermolecular forces
5-30 kJ/mol

Hydrogen bonds increase boiling points

Example: Water’s high boiling point of 100°C
compared to H₂S at -60°C
H-Bond Importance
Hydrogen bonds are critical in biological systems, determining the structure and function of proteins, nucleic acids, and water’s role as a universal solvent.
London Dispersion Forces
London Dispersion Forces: Temporary dipoles caused by the random movement of electrons, present in all molecules but dominant in nonpolar ones.

Dipole-Dipole Interactions
Dipole-Dipole Interactions: Attractions between the positive end of one polar molecule and the negative end of another.

Dipole-Induced Dipole
Dipole-Induced Dipole: A polar molecule induces a temporary dipole in a nonpolar molecule.
Examples
Nitrogen (N₂): London dispersion forces allow N₂ to condense into a liquid at very low temperatures.
Iodine (I₂): Weak Van der Waals forces contribute to its solid state at room temperature.
