Metallic Character- The tendency of an element to exhibit metallic properties.
Examples:
Luster (shine)
Conductivity
Malleability
Metallic Character: Across a Period
Across a Period: Decreases
Elements transition from metals (left) to metalloids to non-metals (right) as electronegativity and ionization energy increase, reducing metallic behavior.
Example: Sodium (Na) is metallic, while chlorine (Cl) is non-metallic in Period 3.
Metallic Character: Down a Group or Family
Down a Group: Increases
Larger atomic radius and lower ionization energy make it easier for atoms to lose electrons, enhancing metallic properties.
Example: Francium (Fr) is more metallic than lithium (Li) in Group 1.
