Step-by-Step Guide to Naming Acids
Naming acids depends on their composition, specifically whether they contain oxygen or not.
1. Determine the Type of Acid
Binary Acids: Contain hydrogen and one nonmetal (no oxygen).
Note: Binary acids are usually gaseous in pure form but become acids when dissolved in water.
Oxyacids: Contain hydrogen, oxygen, and a polyatomic ion.
2. Naming Binary Acids (Hydrogen + Nonmetal)
Format: Hydro + root of nonmetal + -ic + acid
Example:
HCl → Hydrochloric acid
HBr → Hydrobromic acid
HF → Hydrofluoric acid
3. Naming Oxyacids (Hydrogen + Polyatomic Ion)
Do not use the “hydro-” prefix for oxyacids.
If the polyatomic ion ends in -ate, change it to -ic acid
HNO₃ (nitrate) → Nitric acid
H₂SO₄ (sulfate) → Sulfuric acid
If the polyatomic ion ends in -ite, change it to -ous acid
HNO₂ (nitrite) → Nitrous acid
H₂SO₃ (sulfite) → Sulfurous acid
4. Special Prefixes for Halogen Oxyacids
5. Polyprotic Acids (More than One H⁺)
These can donate more than one proton.
Examples:
H₂SO₄ → Sulfuric acid (diprotic)
H₃PO₄ → Phosphoric acid (triprotic)
