Part 3 of a 5-part series on working with 3D scans in Autodesk Fusion.

Josiah Fallaise takes the single suspension scan from Part 2 and breaks the rest of it apart. He separates the lower control arm, tension arm, tie rod, knuckle and strut out of one mesh, turns each into its own component, then builds the bushings and ball joints each one needs in order to move.

The useful idea in this one is that a scan of an assembled car is worth more than it looks. Every part was captured while it was still bolted in place, so all of the components are already sitting in their exact installed positions. Josiah calls it a cheat code. You may have far less detail on any individual part, but you know precisely where each one belongs.

He also does not pretend it is ideal. Where the scan data runs thin, particularly on the second control arm bushing, he shows the workaround and then shows the same arm scanned on its own so you can see what you gave up. Scanning parts individually is still better, and he says so.

Along the way: three-point planes on flat mesh faces, mesh section sketches, fit curve to mesh for cylinders and circles, offset planes from caliper measurements, trimming bodies to a plane, split body as an alternative to press pull, and grounding components to the parent so they hold position while you joint them.
