Plan C | Trying to Run My Combi Boiler off a 200W Power Bank @Plan-C | Uploaded October 2022 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
With all the talk about rolling blackouts this winter, I tried powering my combination boiler off of a powerbank which has an inverter.

Even if you have gas, without electricity the boiler will not work as the pump, ignition etc all need power. I did a few brief experiments to see if it would work and tried to work out how much time it would give heating and / or hot water for in a blackout.

On watching the footage back, the startup did briefly push the power drawe to 400W which is well ahead of the powerbanks rated output but it then settled back to well within limits. It started fine multiple times.

Obviously, a generator would work too but these have limitations such as noise, being outside, not being able to use in the rain etc.

These units can be had for as as little as £100 with vouchers etc.

Please note this is just an idea and your mileage may vary massively depending on what boiler and powerbank you use and how you set the thermostat.

I AM NOT SUGGESTING ANYBODY DO THIS. I AM NOT A BOILER ENGINEER!

Good luck All.
