U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani granted a 14-day stay on Aug. 27 blocking enforcement of key parts of the U.S. Postal Service’s Ballot Mail for Federal Elections rule ahead of the midterms, citing timing concerns and potential irreparable harm. The changes to Postal Service rules would have required election officials to meet new ballot-envelope standards, upload voter information to a USPS portal, and obtain agency approval for mail-in ballots. The League of Women Voters and several states challenged the rule, and the court said they were likely to succeed on several claims. The order pauses the requirements through November 3 while litigation continues.
