A federal judge dismissed the Trump administration’s bid to compel Washtenaw County, Michigan, to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, underscoring limits on federal authority over local enforcement. The decision by U.S. District Judge F. Kay Behm granted the county’s motion to dismiss the DOJ lawsuit and addressed policies on ICE detainers and civil enforcement on county property. Behm wrote that "neither the federal government nor the President may conscript local officials to enforce their will." Filed in April, the suit targeted Sheriff Alyshia Dyer, Prosecuting Attorney Eli Savit, and others over directives barring status inquiries and detentions without a judicial warrant. Before suit, ICE dropped the sheriff’s office from a task force and halted some asset-sharing. The case was dismissed in full.
