On July 10, 2023, I was conducting a property check behind a closed Shoprite and discovered a blue Mercedes-Benz with its headlights off but still running. The vehicle was occupied by a dazed and confused female driver.
Upon approach, the driver appeared disoriented, had slurred speech, and exhibited signs of possible intoxication, including droopy eyelids and dilated pupils. She initially claimed her car key needed charging and later admitted to taking a drive while vaping. Despite her explanations, I noted an odor of alcohol and observed her struggling with basic questions and tasks.
The driver was asked to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests but failed to follow instructions, demonstrating severe impairment. Despite her claims of not consuming alcohol or drugs, she admitted to taking many prescription pills, leading to concerns about her mental state and physical well-being.
Emergency Medical Services were called, and she was transported to Newton Medical Center. A search warrant was obtained for blood and urine samples due to her conflicting statements and impairment.
The driver was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Prescription Medications, Reckless Driving, and Careless Driving.
