The main advantage to adding a variable speed switch to a trolling motor is the extended battery life. Instead of burning away energy though a resister to slow the propeller, a pulse width modulator will turn the motor on and off around fifteen thousand times a minute. The longer it is off, the slower it gets. And while it's off, the motor is not drawing on the battery. So, if your P.W.M.'s potentiometer is at fifty percent, you are truly using only half the power that the original switches would be using. That's good! Installing the darn thing can be a bugger though. Is it worth it? You decide.
