Our down time at this marina likely marked my favorite mom and pop experience along the way to date. It would be hard to beat I think if I ever continue throughout the entire Loop. The big corporate megadocks have nothing on Dallas Bluff in my opinion. But then again, I'm proud to not follow the masses in many ways. If natural settings, peace-n-quiet and economical pricing are amenities that you desire, this is your spot.
While we were there, Mike and I decompressed with the locals. We got some food and gas shopping done. And very importantly, I worked on eliminating one of the major stresses that was plaguing my days on the hook. A lot of cruisers swear by two types of anchor. One known as a Rocna and the other being the old traditional Danforth. While visiting Dallas Bluff, a very large example of the latter was given to me by the owner, Dell Turner. He asked only that if I chose not to keep it, that I pay it forward onto someone else that might be in need.
Good luck finding that type of generosity at most places!
That gesture was one reason I rave so much about this place. There were many reasons. Like hearing original songs played for me on guitar and sung by Linda and hearing how she got her Scottish man back with her, hearing the wonderful tales of independence from the corporate life told by an unorthodox looking, yet brilliant engineer who lived there aboard with his son There was my meeting with the real owner (grandmama) whose aura beamed like a matriarch in charge of the whole tribe, not just her family and watching her lead by good examples, not by any desire for power...There was so much going on at this place that was wholesome. A true gem of a place. Staying there seemed to bring out the best in everyone. I highly recommend it to anyone that passes through. No wonder it was so difficult to move on from this place...
