It's about time, I know. Life just gets in the way. We all have excuses. And travelling vast distances on an old boat through unknown waters is enough of a distraction to keep even ME from getting in a kayak very often. But, doing so can quickly reaffirm something I already knew: Paddling a small plastic boat brings a happiness that few other things in life can deliver. Sure, piloting a 31 foot boat successfully through locks and rivers and hundreds of miles can be very rewarding, but there's also a pride in oneself that comes from shedding the everyday worries and floating along in a tiny boat. The entire waterway becomes your playground. NOT just the channels and docks, but EVERY little estuary and sandbar. It is a ticket to freedom that is worth even more then a houseboat provides. Well, it certainly is a lot cheaper at least.
Many thanks to my buddy Chad for driving for hours to come and hang out for a few days and remind me of these facts I mentioned. It was a great day to kayak fish again. And to everyone reading this: I'm telling ya! Get yourself a kayak or dust off the one you already have and make some time alone or with a friend and go paddle! I'm pretty sure it will be worth the effort.
