We made it, folks! Two years ago I sat down and started remaking Simplicity of Sorrow, the first step in a long journey of redoing 40 pieces of music from scratch. I posted The Village that Time Forgot on the old channel on July 28, 2017, announcing it would be the last one. Since then the task has been to migrate every piece here, with Village's remake being the ultimate goal. Now that day has arrived, it's strange to think about, although in reality it's not the end of the remake project, I've still been writing MIDIs in the two years since, albeit only like eight.
What better way to end this though than with what I honestly think is my personal favourite from this entire project, the music and the video have turned out exactly how I wanted. Let's talk about the video first: Recently I changed my format to show off Doom levels when I wrote music for them in an effort to start moving away from the usual backgrounds, but I was always going to do this for The Given. It is absolutely gorgeous and still blows me away when I look at wide shots showing Occula in its full glory. It's no wonder that on Doom's 25th anniversary, it was named as the one of the most memorable user levels of all time, despite being so far removed from traditional Doom that the only giveaway is the exclusive use of stock Doom 2 textures. I love this map, I love its backstory, and I'm honoured to have provided its soundtrack.
I wanted the remake to be really something special in comparison to the other 39, and I was a little nervous about that, this is ultimately an orchestral piece with some folk influence, but the orchestral remakes so far have, in hindsight, been on the weaker side mix-wise, but I recognise the flaws and was careful not to make the same mistakes here. I'd be happy with how this turned out anyway, however...
...the real icing on the cake for me is Tamsyn. I've wanted to work with them for pretty much as long as I've known them. Before I came to university I sometimes imagined if there would be anyone I could get to play instruments on my work that I don't play myself, and sure enough, here's an amazing multi-instrumentalist who specialises in woodwind.
(I actually considered approaching them for Tears of the Wanderer's oboe part, but it was awkward timing as I was doing that right before Christmas.)
When I started remaking Village, I hit a stumbling block as the original MIDI uses a nylon acoustic guitar which I imagined as a lute, but I don't have a lute VST, and the metal strings of an electric guitar would be a tonal mismatch... but wait, Tamsyn also plays a ukulele that's tuned like a guitar and is in the EXACT range I wrote the original part in (except for the middle section but we'll gloss over that) and has the tone I needed, perfect! Anyway, as I expected, they did a fantastic job all round and it didn't even take that long, all their parts were recorded in under two hours.
