Being the last non-ambient track before the finale in the album, I wanted Cold Air to hit particularly hard so I went for quite a loud mix overall and maybe put the rhythm guitars a bit more forward than I normally do.
It was quite easygoing to produce this one since I could just borrow synth sounds from previous tracks. I would say the bass solo in isolation is one of the hardest bass parts on the album, probably just behind the breaks in Carbon, but aside from that it's a fun and easy track to play.
Although...
I couldn't get the guitar solo down! I don't always write solos by playing them but I know my limits fairly well so *usually* I can play the things I'm writing in the MIDI... and sometimes I get it wrong, lol.
I've gotten better at Cold Air's solo since the album released but while the notes themselves are in line with what I can do, and did do on other tracks, I think I just overestimated how fast I can play. Enter Dee, who amazed us all with her cover of Velocity last year. I knew that if I approached her to play a solo on the album, it would be Cold Air's, and no surprise, she knocked it out of the park.
