The Lincoln-Douglas debates began in Ottawa, IL on Aug. 21, 1858. The second one was in Freeport on the 27th. So what did he do in the meantime between debates? I also wanted to know if he passed through my hometown of Mendota IL while traveling to and from the first two debates. I found my answers and share them in this documentary.
Several trips to historical locations were made to compile info for this video. Some of it dates back to twenty years ago when my parents and I visited Springfield. Some are recent trips such as the Dixon trip with Trenton and Tanner Dominy and their uncle who drove us around. A special thanks to him for that. We got to see the Lincoln statue, the Northwest Territory Museum, the Nachusa house and Lowell Park. The link between Lowell and Lincoln is that Charles Lowell was a Union Soldier in the civil war and Lincoln was the commander-in-chief. You can find more out about Lowell at the Mendota railroad museum where I did much research on him and there is also a large one-of-a-kind picture of the General Lowell Steam locomotive dedicated to him after his death in the civil war. I digress, sorry but it's relevant and important.
I hope people get something out of this video because I quite literally worked my ass off on this one. I often wonder why. I guess it's the passion for history and the link between Lincoln and many places in Illinois. In the Black Hawk war Lincoln was roaming around near La Salle Peru at Fort Wilbourn and he was only 23 years old. I passed by that historical marker a thousand times but never paid attention until recently. It's just on the other side of the 351-bridge leaving La Salle.
II hope you get something out of the video. Thanks for watching. A special shout out to my friend Will who happened to have this amazing old portrait of Lincoln at his house. I used it in this video. Also thank you to Trenton and Tanner Dominy and their uncle again, I appreciate the trip to Dixon and Utica. Much was accomplished and learned.
Please feel free to leave comments about any facts or other info you know about concerning this subject matter. Thank you!
This documentary is for educational purposes, and also to spark commentary and further knowledge about the subject at hand. Much of the content is by the author and much is derived from various sources that would not have made this education project possible. To them I owe much gratitude. We must all work together to complete the picture of history. Thank you!
