Blackstone Park in Mendota has no monument or sign of some sort mentioning how the park got its name. Mr. Blackstone deserves a monument here in the center of the park. It cries out for one.
When I was a young boy I grew up two blocks west of the park. We played there many times. Today it still has the tennis courts, swing sets and basketball hoop. A few things have been added since. Now all we need is new sidewalks exactly where the old ones are and a memorial to Timothy B. Blackstone.
Coming this fall on Oct 23 of 2024, I will be giving a single class at IVCC college on the Illinois Central Land Grant. If any local folks are interested they can sign up. Once the land was granted for the building of the ICRR, Timothy B. Blackstone was assigned to survey and supervise the construction from Bloomington, IL to Dixon, IL.
