This is a compilation of track-side footage of Southern Pacific’s classic Daylight locomotive number 4449. It was shot between July, 2000, and March, 2002 at various locations in Washington and Oregon. In the 2000 footage you’ll see 4449 painted black while it handles a series of BNSF employee appreciation specials in the Seattle area. In May, 2001, it was still in black as it hauled a two day excursion from Portland, it’s hometown, to Yakima, WA, and then over Stampede Pass to Puget Sound and finally back to Portland. In March, 2002, the big 4-8-4 was repainted in the colors it wore while hauling the American Freedom Train across the US to celebrate our bicentennial in 1976. The colors were redone to honor those who fell in the terrorist attacks in September, 2001. That trip was a two day excursion from Portland to Bend, OR, and return.
