Toyota is gearing up to make a bold move into the Repco Supercars Championship in 2026, bringing its high-performance GR Supra to the forefront of Australian motorsport. The automaker will field at least four GEN3 GR Supras, with two of these machines being run by Walkinshaw Andretti United, featuring drivers Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood. This marks a significant expansion of Toyota’s already strong presence in Australian motorsport, where it currently supports grassroots racing through its TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Australia Scholarship Series, the GR CUP, and its successful TGRA Rally Team.

Toyota Australia’s Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations, Sean Hanley, expressed his excitement about the brand’s long-awaited entry into Supercars. He noted that Toyota had been considering competing in Supercars for over two decades, and with the right car, team, and partnership in place, the time had finally come to make this dream a reality. According to Hanley, Toyota's participation in the Supercars Championship is a monumental moment that will not only showcase the GR performance line but also create opportunities for drivers, designers, and engineers to shine.

“This is truly a historic moment for us,” Hanley said. “Our GR performance cars are built on the knowledge we gain from top-tier motorsport. By entering Supercars, we are reinforcing that connection and bringing the thrill of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing to a broader audience.”

Toyota’s entry into Supercars is seen as a natural progression, especially considering the success of its one-make Toyota 86 Series, now rebranded as the GR CUP, which has been a proving ground for emerging racing talent. Several drivers, including Broc Feeney, Will Brown, and Cameron Hill, all started their racing careers in Toyota 86s before advancing to Supercars, demonstrating the effectiveness of this developmental pathway. Toyota plans to continue supporting the GR CUP alongside its Supercars efforts, further extending its commitment to nurturing the next generation of racing stars.

Walkinshaw Andretti United, a powerhouse in Supercars with an impressive history that includes multiple Bathurst 1000 victories and Drivers Championships, will be Toyota’s homologation team. Ryan Walkinshaw, one of the team’s directors, expressed excitement about the partnership and emphasized the strong relationship that has already been built between Toyota Australia and the Walkinshaw Group.

“This partnership is a fantastic honor for us,” Walkinshaw said. “Toyota’s commitment to Supercars and to our team is monumental, and we are thrilled to extend our relationship with them. We are looking forward to achieving success together in 2026 and beyond.”

Toyota has already begun designing its GR Supra race car through its in-house design team, utilizing cutting-edge technologies like Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Virtual Reality (VR) tools to create a clay model. The car will be powered by Toyota’s proven 2UR-GSE all-aluminum, quad-cam V8 engine, which has been a staple in several of the brand’s high-performance vehicles, including the 2019 Dakar-winning HiLux.

By entering the Supercars Championship, Toyota aims to enhance its GR road cars through the lessons learned on the racetrack. This move underscores the philosophy behind the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing performance line, which leverages motorsport expertise to develop thrilling cars like the GR86, GR Yaris, GR Corolla, and GR Supra.

With its commitment to Australian motorsport and a vision for the future, Toyota’s entry into the Supercars Championship is set to bring new excitement to the sport and strengthen the brand’s legacy in racing.
