Gaban explains to Shanks he met Garp and tells him about Roger’s son, aka Ace. (Shanks says Ace is like a little brother.) Harald is fighting off possession by Imu and orders the giants in the room to kill him. Shanks explains that the true mark of a God knight grants “a boost in inhuman strength and immortality.” It’s interesting to note that the Gorosei should receive this type of amp as well. This is super cool to think about considering Harald on his own was already super strong; now he’s potentially been given an amp, though we don’t know how strong he is currently, as he’s depressed and fighting off Imu. After Shanks’s explanation we see an advanced conqueror clash in the distance, which is shown to be Loki briefly clashing with Harald. Harald says that no one can kill him but Loki after he eats the giant’s great treasure (A devil fruit) Gaban & Shanks show up and attack Harald off guard, and we see Shanks clearly relying on his swordsmanship here to go up against Harald. This is super important to keep note of, as a lot of people are saying this is somehow a Shanks upscale? But this doesn’t actually contradict anything, which we’ll break down in a sec. The giants emphasize how Loki must reach the devil fruit and eat it to end things even after Gaban and Shanks show up, which hypes up just how strong Loki will be after he eats it and how Shanks and later Luffy compare to Loki in the present. If he really WILL join the crew, he may not just be a heavy hitter but may take Zoro’s spot as number two if not just be the powerhouse of the crew. Loki is ridiculously strong and is possibly put on a higher pedestal in this part of Elbaph than Shanks or, at the very least, Gaban himself. Which is odd considering the fandom now is thinking this is the end-all be-all to The swordsman propaganda, but it’s always just been a headcanon argument. There’s a conspiracy in the One Piece community about how there are different types of swordsmanship, like ones who use haki and ones who, I guess, are just able to use swords in a super fancy way, like Mihawk and Vista. This is just one of many cope arguments that people commonly use in Shanks vs. Mihawk discourse. Many believe that Shanks is just some “Haki Wizard” (whatever that even means) that uses a sword instead of a staff, or that Shanks WAS a swordsman in the past but isn’t now somehow?? I’ve seen people say that Shanks “just isn’t in his prime” when Mihawk fights him and that Shanks just got waaaay stronger, but Mihawk didn’t, I guess? Some people UNIRONICALLY think that Mihawk is just a Vista rival afraid of Shanks, and the reason Shanks isn’t the world’s strongest swordsman is because Mihawk is dodging a fight with him. There’s SO much, man. “The title is just about skill, bro!” “Shanks is less skilled but has better Haki, bro!” People have been coping with this for literal years, and any time any character with a sword shows up, the never-ending war begins again. This often shifts into a narrative argument that Shanks fans will try to win, saying things like “Mihawk isn’t in the final panel with all the characters going after the one piece so he’s not that relevant “ or “Shanks is Luffy’s end goal” and “Mihawk is Zoro’s end goal,” meaning that Shanks HAS to be stronger or that Shanks is more plot relevant than Mihawk, which somehow makes him stronger?
