For Halloween 2015 we took a look at the best movie monsters of all time. And now, years later, we’d like to do things a little differently. Instead of sorting cinema’s greatest creatures, beasts and killers by what kind of monster they are, we’re looking at how they make you feel. How are movie monsters designed to elicit emotions from the audience? From disgust to awe to mystery and everything in between, or at least 7 other things in between, here are the top 10 Movie Monsters of All Time, re-listed.

Starting out with the fear of death in films like The Ring, Pan’s Labyrinth and The Cabin in the Woods to the many other flavors of fear on film in the gothic and terrifying Bram Stoker’s Dracula or the silent and agoraphobic A Quiet Place, cinematic monsters have wreaked emotional havoc of one kind or another for over 100 years. The original sympathetic Universal Monsters like Gill Man or Frankenstein’s monster are the ancestors of Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water or District 9. While existential dread in Donnie Darko or The Witch or Under the Skin has made modern horror a truly robust genre.

This list was written by Billy Jackson and edited by Clint Gage.
