Director Sean Baker has made a name for himself with low-budget character studies that speak to a broader American experience. Tangerine was shot on an iphone and The Florida Project looks at the fringes of life outside Disney in Orlando. With Red Rocket, he once again shows a knack for intersecting pop culture with intimate human drama.

When on screen ex porn star Mikey Saber returns to his rural Texas roots, Red Rocket and real life ex porn star Simon Rex face a host of American issues, from the opioid crisis to health care and even his own mid-life failure. While the film gets distracted with some pacing problems as the story proceeds, a wild finale full of the diverse personalities in small town Texas make this a film whose heart is in the right place.
