Nobody does Broadway quite like Hollywood and there’s no music like show music. These may or may not be actual sayings but the moral of the story is, in Hollywood accounting the only numbers you can trust are the musical numbers. While the genre, like any other, has seen it’s share of ups and downs, the song and dance extravaganza has been a staple of the film industry since the advent of sound, and we here at CineFix are long overdue in diving in. From the glitzy chorus lines of the MGM era to imaginative experiments, these are our picks for the Top 10 Movie Musicals of All Time.

With early luminaries like Busby Berkeley, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers giving way to Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds in the golden age of the form, the history of movie musicals has dabbled in nearly every genre there is. Barbara Streisand helped turn the corner into a more modern take on the genre with films like Funny Girl and Hello Dolly. While the 70’s and 80’s saw some straight up bonkers entries from Bob Fosse and Cabaret or Robert Altman with Nashville, pop musicians got in the action as well, The Who with Quadrophenia, David Bowie in Labyrinth before giving way to the sheer dominance of the Disney Animated Musical starting in the 90s. Chicago and Mama Mia and Pixar and Dreamworks and Frozen and Frozen 2 and La La Land and countless others have brought a resurgence of the musical in the 21st century, ensuring the future of the movie musical is in good hands.

This List was written by Billy Jackson and edited by Justin Donaldson.
