When Nigel Gresley, yet to be knighted, was appointed Chief Mechanical Engineer upon the formation of the London & North Eastern Railway, did he ever expect his only electric locomotive design to be the first electric locomotive for the first nation in Europe to completely displace steam with electric traction?
Or, for that matter, for his EM1 design to still have traces left in both the Netherlands and Britain alike, whilst the Woodhead Line they were built for is a distant memory?
