People like to argue (in good fun or otherwise) what the best steam locomotive wheel arrangement is. This is, like always, a trivial matter as there is one clear winner when it comes to number of locomotives built worldwide. Yet what's with this "consolidation" nickname? And why are there so many of them? Today, we discuss the genesis of the most universal type of locomotive!

This video has, once again, been quite a journey for me. I started work on it in October 2025, animated almost all of the footage in November, and then let it sit for 7 months. Indeed it was not until July 2026 that I continued working on it. There is no excuse, I was in a deep creative slum and only found the will to animate again in May of the same year.
