I wanted to see for myself how shallow the depth of field would be on this Tokina 11-16mm wide angle lens. This is only a test that I thought I'd share. I may have created a new show in the process: "Boring, Test Video."
Because of the short focal length of this lens, it's harder to drop the background out of focus. An 85mm lens at this aperture (f2.8) and distance (2 feet away from the subject) with a lot room between the foreground and background, would have a much blurrier background.
Because this is one of my newest lenses and it's also a very specialized lens, I haven't shot on it as much I would like. Therefore I wanted to see how it looked in a typical talking head setup, not that I will use it this way most of the time.
The image looks good overall. I appear to be in sharp focus and the colors seem accurate. I don't see any noticeable fringing or other artifacts.
If you need a lens that can capture much more of the scene in a single shot, this Tokina is a good buy and will get the job done quite nicely. It has some strange quirks like the way you change from manual to auto focus (slider ring on front of the lens) but it seems to shoot nice video. I believe I've seen some heavy fringing when looking at very fine photo detail of this lens but that's not how I'll use it.
It's an APS-C lens which means it's specifically made for crop sensor cameras like the Canon 60D that this was shot with. They also come in various mounts that includes Nikon.
