Using dynamic microphones usually means working with a cardioid polar patten. This creates an overemphasis of the bass frequencies which leads to proximity effect (deep, muddy low end bass) and also popping p's, b's and any other syllable that forces the air out of your mouth and into the microphone capsule.
One way to deal with plosives is better mic technique but if you're in a situation where you don't have time to teach microphone technique or you need to be really close to the microphone, another solution is an omnidirectional microphone like the Shure SM63.
This is an usual mic in that most dynamic, handheld microphones have a cardioid polar pattern. These are nice because they give you more rejection of sounds that you don't want in your audio such as the background.
The Shure SM63 is a dynamic microphone and is much better at preventing plosives due to its omnidirectional polar pattern. An omni polar pattern, one that picks up sound from all around the mic capsule, does not suffer from proximity effect or plosives because, in general, the polar patten does not emphasize the lower end frequencies. This also leads to a much more natural and open sound to your audio.
I actually really like the way the SM63 handles my voice and does not pop p's and b's and the fall off (sensitivity) is decent in that it won't pick up too much of the audio once the microphone is a foot or further away from the sound source.
However, what I did not expect was the size. It's tiny. It feels like a microphone made for kids and in fact it would be a great mic for kids because it would fit their hands, not get in the way of their face and doesn't require great microphone technique. So if you have kid YouTubers or podcasters, it might be an option!
But seriously, this mic feels kind of silly in an adult hand and that is why I'm returning it. Because I won't be the one gernerally using the mic, instead I'll be handing it off to someone else, I think it's better if I get something more handheld friendly like the RE20 which is also a cardioid, omnidirectional microphone.
But the SM63 does exactly what I bought it to do..reject plosives and maybe because it's a dynamic mic, it's not overly sensitive to sounds beyond what you intend to go into the mic...your voice.
