The principle of superposition (younger rocks overlie older rocks) allows us to create a relative time scale for Earth. However, because sediments are not deposited continuously and erosion can occur, there are gaps in the sedimentary record. There are intervals of time that are not represented by rock. I discuss these ideas in this video.
