Today we archiving a true gem that many may have missed this year. Tides of Tomorrow is made by the same studio who made the awesome Road 96. The developers are masters in storytelling and often create unique settings with memorable characters.
Tides of Tomorrow is their most ambitious projec yet and it has such a unique and cool mechanic that I think can be explored more in future titles.
The setting is a post apocalyptic world where the whole world has been flooded and polluted with plastic garbage. There is so much plastic that the remaining population is slowly getting sick and the only cure is a substance known as Ozen. Different factions battle each other for control of Ozen production and a possible cure to save mankind.
The unique mechanic that the game revolves around is that this is a multiplayer story game. At the beginning of the game you choose another player to follow through a generated seed and you will see each of their important choices throughout your own campaign. And this will have great consequences to your own story.
If the other player has befriended a certain guard or group, they might welcome you with open arms if you say that you are on friendly terms with the other player. But if they were insulted by the one you are following, then they might not act so kindly to you and refuse to even help you.
The types of scenarios and situations that will change was very cool and this game is a true joy to play if you follow any friends that you know. Many things will impact the story including if you take resources or leave them for other players.
The world itself is also absolutely beautiful and vibrant and I could not get enough of the colorful cyberpunk look combined with a waterworld setting. It feels truly unique and the async multiplayer gimmick is something I want to see explored more.
The game is quite long though and at certain points there were segments where it felt a bit repetitive and the amount of stealth that you have to do also outlasts its welcome.
But other than that I think this is an absolute must play for fans of adventure games and a sure spot in my top 10 of favorite games of this year.
