Rain brings potato harvest to a grinding halt on Day 3. The fields are way too muddy to dig, so we switch gears to equipment maintenance, replacing worn-out disc blades that have seen better days. With the disc ready, all we can do is wait and hope the ground dries out.
The next day brings sunshine—and a new strategy. Our first field is still a mud pit, but we have a sandy field that might just save the day. We move the harvester and crossover to the sandier half, carefully navigating the wet conditions. The sand holds up perfectly under the heavy machinery, and for the first time, we’re digging in wet sand. Turns out, it’s the ideal scenario to keep the trucks from getting stuck!
The potatoes are looking phenomenal—big, uniform Narkotas perfect for baked potatoes. Yields are high, morale is higher. But as we work toward the edge of the sandbar, the mud returns. Trucks start to bog down, and it’s time to break out the Yankum ropes. With ropes rated up to 201,000 lbs, we pull trucks like toys. We even pack sand with the pull tractor in reverse using GPS autosteer to keep everyone moving.
Back at the cellar, we make a quick fix on the sizing machine and review the sandy spuds—slightly skinned but in great shape. The harvester’s hydraulic shakers save us from mud buildup on the chains, and by the end of the day, only four trucks were pulled out—proof the sandy strategy worked. We push until midnight, determined to stay on schedule.
