There is no part of me that’s dry… except maybe my feet. Everything else is soaked. After a night of heavy rain, the farm is one giant mud pit, but we’re pushing on anyway because this field was dry yesterday and we’ve got cellars to fill. The trucks are slipping around, the potatoes are a little small, and the wild oats in this patch are out of control, but the Norkotas are still digging decent.
We’re racing the weather with about an hour until the next rainstorm hits, so we’re running slower to get the potatoes cleaner and hoping we can finish this round before the sky opens up. Of course, just as we’re about to finish, the harvester deviner snaps and we get to fix it in the pouring rain. Perfect timing.
The cellar’s nearly full, so we’re moving everything—pilers, conveyors, cords—through puddles that might as well be lakes. Everything is soaked, muddy, slippery, and twice as heavy as usual. We’re trying not to energize any puddles with 240 volts, trying not to lose boots in the mud, and trying to keep cameras from fogging over while the rain pounds the metal roof.
Once we finally get the conveyor line set up, we have to build a dirt dam to keep the cellar from flooding. By the time we’re done, we’re frozen, soaked, and covered in yellow glove dye.
We’re officially rained out, heading home for hot showers, and hoping the fields dry out before Tuesday. What a day.
