I bought the absolute CHEAPEST game on the Nintendo Switch eShop... It literally cost ONE PENNY! Let's see if can actually buy you a playable game, or if it's just digital trash!
Okay, I will be the first to admit that sometimes I am an absolute glutton for punishment. But the other day, I had a genuinely weird thought pop into my head: What is the absolute, bare-minimum cheapest game on the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 eShop that I can actually go ahead and purchase right now? To make this a real challenge, I set some ground rules. I wasn't looking for free-to-play games that are completely littered with microtransactions, and I definitely wasn't looking for "free" games that just exist to sell you a million pieces of DLC. I wanted a full, standalone game purchase for the lowest price possible.
Well, I found one. Actually, I found two of them for literally one single penny! Today, we are diving into one of them. This is Kitten Island. And no, I am not "kitting" around here (pun absolutely intended). We are going to boot up Kitten Island and see if a game that costs $0.01 is actually worth the storage space on your console.
The Setup & First Impressions
For today's test, I am playing this directly in handheld mode and using the NYXI Hyperion 3 Joy-Con alternatives that we recently checked out on the channel. I wanted to make sure I had a solid, comfortable controller setup just in case this game required some intense, precision platforming.
Right out of the gate, I have to admit something that pains me to say: this game actually looks stupid cute. Now, for those who know me, you know I absolutely hate cats. So right away, the protagonist and the entire feline theme are working against me. But objectively speaking? Graphically, it looks surprisingly good! The vibrant colors pop on the screen, and the environments are bright and cheerful.
The Gameplay: Is it worth a penny? Does It Suck? Is it GOOD?!?!
When it comes to the actual platforming mechanics, it’s fairly basic. You run, you jump, and you navigate the island. However, don't expect the deep, refined movement tech of a Nintendo first-party title. I immediately tried to execute a downward dive attack exactly like you can do in Super Mario, and... nope. You can't do a dive attack here. Come on, you're a cat! You should be able to pounce!
I did run into a few slightly clunky moments where I had some problems with the jumping physics and landing exactly where I wanted to. But then I have to take a step back and remind myself: This is a penny. It's not even on sale. The retail price is just a penny. Let's talk about the sound design. The meowing sound effects are okay at first, but they quickly cross the line into the annoying side of things. But then again, real cats are a lot on the annoying side too, so I guess we can just call that "highly realistic sound design" and give the developers a pass!
The Final Verdict
Honestly? It is okay! I have spent a whole lot more money on a whole lot worse games in my lifetime. (I'm looking directly at you, 100-hour boring, grindy RPGs!).
I would say this is definitely a game geared heavily toward younger kids, which isn't exactly unexpected given the art style and the nonexistent price point. If you have younger kids who just want a bright, simple platformer to run around in and make a cat meow, go ahead and spend the penny. I mean, this is not terrible!
