Are you tired of playing your favorite original Nintendo Switch games in a blurry 720p resolution when playing in handheld mode on your new console? One of the biggest criticisms and most frequent complaints about the Nintendo Switch 2 has been that it didn't do anything to make original backward-compatible Nintendo Switch games look any better on the go. Historically, they have been locked at a maximum of 720p resolution in handheld mode, with some demanding titles dropping far below that limit.
That is, until now! Nintendo just surprised everyone by announcing and releasing a brand new system firmware update for the Nintendo Switch 2 (version 22.0.0), and it introduces an absolute game-changer for backward compatibility. Now we can finally play Nintendo Switch 1 games in full 1080P in handheld Mode when Playing on a Switch 2.
Huge shoutout and credit to our good friend Shawn Long over at the @RGT85 YouTube channel for bringing this massive update to my attention. He recently discussed this heavily requested feature in his latest video, and I highly recommend checking out his full breakdown here:

Let’s dive into exactly what this new feature is, how it works behind the scenes, and what it looks like in action.
This highly anticipated new feature is officially called "Nintendo Switch Handheld Mode Boost." When enabled in your system settings, this option forces the performance of original Nintendo Switch 1 software to run as if it were being played in TV/Docked mode, even while you are completely undocked. Because the original Switch could output up to 1080p when docked to a television, this update effectively allows those classic titles to utilize the Nintendo Switch 2's gorgeous 1080p display to its absolute full potential!
To demonstrate this massive leap in visual fidelity, we are looking at Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. This is a classic Switch 1 game running directly on the Switch 2 in handheld mode. I am recording right off of the Switch 2 screen so you can witness the unbelievable upgrade in visual clarity. The pixel density is dramatically improved, edges are significantly sharper, and the overall image quality is night and day compared to the standard 720p output. The absolute best part? I don't feel any additional input lag, delay, latency, or performance hiccups whatsoever. It runs perfectly smooth while looking better than ever before.
Of course, pushing higher resolutions on a portable device does come with a few minor compromises. As Nintendo's official system prompt explains, because you are asking more out of the internal hardware and the display itself, this mode will eat into your battery life a little bit more rapidly. Increased power consumption is totally expected when you are rendering games at 1080p on the go instead of 720p. Furthermore, because the system is tricking the software into thinking it is docked to a television, it prevents original Switch software from utilizing the touchscreen functionality.
But honestly? I think this is an incredible trade-off. It’s important to note that this feature is completely exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2. It is not something you can download on the original Nintendo Switch or the Switch OLED model, as their screens physically max out at a 720p resolution.
This is a remarkably smart move in the right direction by Nintendo. It gives everybody even more reasons to upgrade to the Switch 2 and revisit their massive library of games. Getting full 1080p docked mode performance in a portable form factor for Switch 1 games is a huge win for the community. This is a feature they should have had ready on launch day, but better late than never!
What do you guys think of the new Handheld Mode Boost? Are there any specific crusty-looking Switch 1 games that you are excited to revisit in glorious 1080p on your Nintendo Switch 2? Let me know all of your thoughts and opinions down below in the comments section!
