Atari is absolutely killing it lately! Over the last few years, they have completely redefined themselves as champions of physical media, retro preservation, and incredible classic collections. From bringing back the legendary Disney Afternoon Collection to shipping out brand-new physical releases like their latest Bubsy project, Atari has been on an absolute tear. But today, they just dropped a massive bombshell announcement that will have retro fans and Disney enthusiasts shouting, "You've got a friend in me!"
Coming this October to modern platforms—including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2—Atari is officially releasing Toy Story: Retro Roundup! and the Toy Story 3 Complete Edition. Best of all for physical media collectors, Atari is packaging these together into a gorgeous physical Double Pack so you don’t have to choose between your favorite eras of classic Disney gaming. Seeing the Game Boy versions included is an awesome touch that really shows Atari is dedicated to capturing the full history of these licensed titles. There are even references on the page to A Bug's Life, hinting at just how deep this retrospective vault might go! To make things even better, Atari is loading this up with their signature museum-style content, including exclusive interviews, development history, and behind-the-scenes peeks at how these games were created back in the day. If you love video game history, that behind-the-scenes stuff is worth the price of admission alone.
Toy Story 3 Complete Edition & Toy Box Mode
On the other side of the double pack, we are getting the Toy Story 3 Complete Edition. This brings back the incredibly beloved modern classic, famous for its revolutionary "Toy Box Mode." Toy Box Mode was essentially an open-world, wild-west sandbox where you could fully customize your town, unlock unique buildings, and play your own way with Woody, Buzz, and Jessie. It was a massive precursor to games like Disney Infinity, and having it fully remastered and preserved on modern consoles is fantastic.
Now, if I had one minor wishlist item, I do wish they found a way to bundle Toy Story Mania! into this package as well. Whether you played it at the Disney Parks or picked up the motion-control version back on the Nintendo Wii, that is a flat-out fun arcade shooter. But even without it, this collection is an incredible value. While these individual titles might not hold the absolute legendary status of the Capcom-developed classics found in the Disney Afternoon Collection, they are still incredibly fun, vibrant, and nostalgic pieces of platforming history.
I’m particularly fascinated to see what kind of quality-of-life enhancements Atari builds into the 16-bit and 8-bit titles. Games from that era were notoriously unforgiving (anyone who played the original 1995 Toy Story game on the Genesis knows exactly what I mean about that RC Car level!). Rewind features, save states, and display filters will go a long way in making these games accessible for a whole new generation of players on the Switch and Switch 2.
This announcement has me incredibly nostalgic, not just for the games, but for the movies themselves. The Toy Story franchise is practically perfect, but we all have our favorites. For me, Toy Story 3 is amazing, but it’s honestly tough to watch—it hits me right in the feels every single time at the end! Because of that, Toy Story 2 has to be my absolute favorite. It's just a masterpiece from start to finish.
