May the Fourth be with you—and also with you, for those who celebrate Star Wars Day like I do! We have some fantastic news today if you are a massive Star Wars fan, and to celebrate, I want to talk about three of my favorite Star Wars games of all time.
Before I dive into the games, I have to acknowledge what would have been my brother's 53rd birthday. Yes, I am the family Star Wars Nerd but he was born on May 4th. Having lost his battle to Colon Cancer in 2023, we miss him every day. Happy Heavenly Birthday, Scott.
3 Great Star Wars Games You Need to Play
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Switch):
This original title was absolutely incredible. The destructive environments and the sheer variety of Force abilities you had at your disposal made you feel unstoppable. The story was phenomenal, and the voice acting that went into Starkiller made this an amazing experience. It has also been remastered for modern consoles like the Nintendo Switch!
Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader (GameCube):(Quick correction from the video: This is Rogue Squadron II, not III!) Back when we played the Battle of Hoth on the Nintendo 64's Rogue Squadron, we thought we had seen the future of gaming. Rogue Leader took it to an entirely different level. Fighting on the Death Star in that very first level literally felt like you were playing inside the movie. It was a fantastic leap forward for the GameCube.
Star Wars: Republic Commando (Original Xbox, Switch):
I didn't play this game until years later, but it easily became my favorite game on the original Xbox. If you love first-person shooters, and if you liked Battlefront but wanted something with a deeper story mode, this is the definitive game. Thankfully, this classic has also been remastered and re-released on the Nintendo Switch!
The Arcade1Up Star Wars Cabinet Re-Release
Why am I standing in front of my Star Wars Arcade1Up machine today? Because they have officially announced they are re-releasing this exact arcade unit!
The cabinet features three classic titles:
Star Wars Arcade Game
The Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
I have to admit, I'm not a huge fan of the Return of the Jedi arcade game (even though it's my favorite movie in the saga), but the original vector-graphics Star Wars cabinet is legendary. On my personal unit, I am using an upgraded GRS Flight Stick—Glenn did an amazing job making a fun, great-playing system that perfectly captures that "Yahoo!" feeling of blowing up the Death Star.
Is the Re-Release Worth It?
Right now, they have the new version on sale for $549.99. Honestly, that is more expensive than what I paid for mine (I believe I originally paid around $449 or $499). Since it has been a couple of years since this cabinet was available, I am genuinely glad for the fans who missed out on the original run. However, I also think consumers are being taken advantage of just a wee little bit. Even at $549, or a $599 regular price, it seems overpriced. But I absolutely love the cabinet itself—it’s going to have to do until I can afford an original 80s machine!
