Did you know that sometimes nature mixes up elements too?

Barite is a common mineral made from barium sulfate. But... because radium and barium have very similar chemical behavior, radium ions can sometimes take the place of barium while the mineral crystal is forming!

The result... is called radiobarite. It still essentially barite, however with radioactive radium incorporated directly into its crystal structure.

And with gamma spectrometry, the radium and its decay products leave behind a very recognizable signature.
