Sometimes radiation is placed directly inside a tumor on purpose!
Iodine-125 is a radioactive isotope used in brachytherapy, where tiny sealed sources can deliver radiation directly to cancerous tissue while limiting exposure to surrounding areas.
It has a half life of around 59 days and decays by electron capture, producing low energy photons and conversion electrons along the way.
It’s a very different use of radioactivity from the samples we normally measure, but one with an important role in nuclear medicine.
