What even is lutetium?
Lutetium is the rarest naturally occurring rare-earth element and one of the last elements to be discovered. In its metallic form, it slowly reacts with oxygen in the air, which is why samples are often stored in sealed ampoules.
But lutetium also has another interesting secret however…
A small fraction of natural lutetium exists as Lutetium-176, a radioactive isotope with an incredibly long half-life. In fact, scientists spent decades refining its value, and it wasn’t until recently that the most precise measurements became available.
Using the Radiacode 110, the radioactive side of one of the periodic table’s most overlooked elements was explored!
