I'd really like to apologise for the sound quality in parts - turn on #Subtitles for a better experience. There is nothing I can do about the wind, but the gimbal makes a noise that is audible on the video...I want to make smoother vids, but it doesn't look like this is the solution...
Professionals will note that I am not handling the combs very well in the first inspection...they should be held in a vertical plane to stop the nectar falling out - any other rookie mistakes, please let me know.
These bees are Iberian Bees #IberianBees Apis Mellifera Iberiensis which is our native bee. They are small bees with a propensity to be defensive and to have guard bees flying for at least 24 hours after any disturbance - as I can attest having just been stung as I wandered up to see them having opened the hive yesterday - my bad!
Did you know that bee stings are acidic whereas wasp stings are alkali? If you are stung by a bee, treat with bicarbonate of soda...treat a wasp sting with vinegar!
Bee venom is purported to be a treatment for arthritis, but an MD Doctor friend of mine says that it is not prescribed because it is contraindicated with anaphylaxis - I am certainly not suggesting you try yourself, but are any beekeepers able to give anecdotal confirmation? If you keep bees, you are going to get stung.
After much planning, we left England 18 months ago to build a new life in beautiful rural Portugal #SerraDaEstrela - It's not been easy, but it has been wonderful.

I don't really know much about bees, but we are trying to become less reliant on the shops and to grow more of our own produce, so we thought we'd give #beekeeping a try! We have collected a "split" hive and the next video will be looking ar how it gets on with hive inspections.
