We are using an incubator to hatch chicken eggs from our flock
We've kept poultry for years but this is our first proper go at hatching a new generation, so we are learning as we go.
We are gradually reducing our reliance on supermarkets, already growing or sourcing locally all our own fruit & veg & producing our own eggs...one thing that we need to find out is whether we have the stomach to raise & process our own meat, so starting with raising chickens using eggs from our own birds seems a logical start...we will not be showing the last part of the process as there are enough videos online that detail it without us adding to it, so rest easy!
After much planning, we left England just over a year ago to build a new life in beautiful rural Portugal #SerraDaEstrela - It's not been easy, but it has been wonderful.

I don't really know much about raising chickens, but we are trying to become less reliant on the shops and to grow more of our own produce, so we thought we'd give it a try!
Remember, if you are raising chickens that you will get males...and you may not be popular with neighbours if you have a cock that crows when they are having a lie-in! Consider what you will do with any male birds before you start!
