The Serra da Estrela is one of Portugal's most valuable natural heritage sites, recognized for its scenic beauty, unique biodiversity, and ecological importance. Recently, there has been a significant reforestation effort in the region, with numerous projects dedicated to environmental recovery and promoting sustainability.
However, the proposed expansion of the Alvarrões Mine, which could reach 341 hectares, represents a serious threat to this sensitive ecosystem. This mining project not only compromises the landscape integrity of one of the main entrances to the Serra da Estrela but also endangers the progress made in reforestation projects and the preservation of local biodiversity.
Considering:
Environmental Impact: The mine's expansion will generate air, water, and soil pollution, negatively affecting local flora and fauna. Mining can cause the destruction of natural habitats, leading to species loss and ecosystem degradation.
Landscape Impact: The mining operation will result in visual degradation of the landscape, compromising the natural beauty of the Serra da Estrela, which is a significant tourist attraction and a symbol of regional identity.
Impact on Reforestation Projects: The region has been the site of several reforestation projects aimed at recovering degraded areas impacted by forest fires, promoting biodiversity, and mitigating the effects of climate change. Mining activity is incompatible with these objectives, representing a setback in conservation and sustainability efforts.
