BRAKE FAIL on my old Toyota HiLux... not ideal when you're halfway back from Spain! In this video, I try to fix the rear drum brakes on my 1988 Hilux here on the homestead in rural Portugal. I'm not a mechanic – just a determined DIYer doing my best to stay on the road.
Join me as I diagnose a leaking wheel cylinder, replace brake shoes, and wrestle with springs, rust, and fading daylight! I also talk about IBC tanks, water safety, and Legionella – and why moving water matters.

After much planning, we sold up in England in 2021 and moved to beautiful rural Portugal to start a new life. Living off the land, becoming more sustainable, and learning new skills has been challenging but deeply rewarding. Homesteading in Portugal isn’t always easy, but it’s been an incredible experience.
