This is an old method that came out years ago when people were still really experimenting with 3D printing filament. Before companies like CookieCAD and esun came out with rainbow and dual color filament, your option were single color.
Then someone realized that your hot end is just an extruder which can print a new batch of filament. I've wanted to try this method forever, finally have something I'd like to print with it. If you make a spiral with the filament the diameter, you can then pause the print half way and swap colors! This is printed (re-printed?) in NinjaTech Armadilo and NinjaFlex
