The Butthole Surfers are back... or are they?
When I first saw After the Astronaut, I assumed it was a brand-new comeback album. I couldn't have been more wrong. What I discovered instead was one of rock's most fascinating lost albums, a record that was completed in 1998, rejected by Capitol Records, buried for nearly three decades, and only now finally released exactly as the band originally intended.
In this review, I discuss how my expectations completely changed once I learned the album's history, why this isn't Electriclarryland 2, and how the band's return to their experimental 1980s roots shapes every song on the record.
