The Worst Lie Final Fantasy Fans Tell You. "Final Fantasy Has Always Been About Change" is a BS excuse. It gets used to shut down all criticism, no matter how minor or legitimate. If FF can be anything, then the name means nothing. Every good game series is about overcoming a set of changes and challenges. FF is not unique in that regard. This lie has destroyed the conversation around the series. It deserves to get called out and challenged. If I sound angry here, decades of people spouting this BS will do that to you
From my playthrough of Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age. This is where the mainline FF series went completely wrong. Square Enix threw out the Turn Based Combat system of Squaresoft's FF1 - FFX, and instead made a Single Player Auto Battler MMO. It feels like it's designed to get more people to play FF11, where the real money is at. It feels like they used an entire numbered FF as a beta testing ground for the next Massive Multiplayer Online RPG (FFXIV - FF14). You might like the new gameplay, but it's not a "natural evolution" of the combat of FF1-10. FFXII may have made more sense in 2006, during the height of MMO Mania (World of Warcraft was only 2 years old, and it was a worldwide phenomenon). But we don't live in that time period anymore. Today it is as clear as day that FF12 is massive break from the Golden Age of FF, and the true beginning of its Dark Ages (which we're still in). It belongs in the same conversation as FF15, 16 and FF7 Remake / Rebirth. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has sparked debate about modern Final Fantasy. That game makes it impossible to look at Modern FF the same way, ever again.
