This was written for my map "Rejection of the Natural Order" for Sunless Empire, released in 2025.
My goal was to write something different than what I'm used to, selecting instruments that could lend to that "exploring an ancient civilization" feel, and being sophisticated enough to be interesting to listen to for the long length of the map.
I actually wrote "Honor in Sacrifice" for this map, but ended up giving it to Death Bear and writing this one up from scratch somewhat late in my map's development. The more I listened to the original song, the more I wanted something else for this one, to match its sense of scale and wonder and frenetic pacing. I focused a lot on giving the song a tangible ebb and flow and weaving and layering the instruments with each other, while giving the flute a lot of room to shine. I also consciously decided not to have any of the parts repeat, to hopefully minimize the repetitiveness of repeated listens. Because the map has calmer moments of exploration that punctuate the bursts of action, I made sure to include a couple of down beat parts as well.
I have my misgivings about some aspects of the map - I definitely got burnt out well before I finished it, but I'm very pleased with how this midi turned out and I think it's got some of my most sophisticated writing to date.
