➤ Analysis:
It is an incredible feat how Nishiki can create ecstatic beauty from such minimal material.
Here, we open with a simple D minor arpeggio (D-F-A), with the piano continuing with similar arpeggios throughout the track. Accompanying this are occasional vocal "Huh's" and a vocal solo soaring on top.
Starting in D minor, we fall down a tone to C major (0:07), then follow a plagal cadence (chord IV to I; C major to G minor) into G minor (G-B♭-D) which then falls similarly down a tone into F major (F-A-C). This is very simple stuff, but Nishiki adds interest by staggering the placement of these chords. Instead of setting one chord per bar, he shifts to the 2nd chord half-way through a bar and then holds it (at a ratio of 1:3 rather than 2:2). This small structural decision creates so much more interest in the material.
Similar structural attention occurs throughout the entire track, with a quick shift to a 2/4 time signature at 0:13 as we shift down a further tone into E♭ major with an added 7th (E♭-G-B♭-D). As this continues, Nishiki teases the Dorian mode with a shift from G minor into C major (a major version of chord IV in a minor key is a characteristic trait of Dorian).
But we started in D minor! So how do we return to D minor from C major? Well, if you've read any of these past analyses, you'll know about the little trick of "tertiary modulations" (jumping to a chord a 3rd away), which is precisely what Nishiki does here going from C major to A major (a minor 3rd away) which leads us seamlessly back into D minor via a perfect cadence (chord V to I; A to Dm).
From here (0:25), the material repeats with additional sustained choir. But when this section ends (0:42), instead of using the tertiary modulation again, Nishiki simply jumps from C major to D minor. This is also very functional as an "interrupted cadence" (chord V to VI; C to Dm). From here (0:42), we get a brief circle of 5ths (Dm - Gm - C - F - B♭; note how they all fall down a 5th, or up a 4th).
This harmony continues for largely the rest of the track, with a short return to the opening harmonies at 1:29. And then we progress into the (Day) version of the track, which harmonically is nearly identical.
Instead, the difference here is an instrumental one; a guitar ostinato with panpipe melody introduce the material. Strings are then added (2:10), followed by the interesting (but successful) choice of solo trumpet (2:24), and later on a guitar / bouzouki playing with the tremolo technique (3:02) for that fast fluttering sound.
Finally, to tail off the medley, I added a short conclusive ending combining material from both (Night) and (Day) versions, with one final tease of the Dorian mode (Gm - C - Gm) during the final plagal cadence.

One of my favourite Zelda Links Awakening dungeon themes heard after you begin to learn of the true nature of Koholint Island, now fully transcribed with sheet music and instrumental parts!
➤ Analysis:
A remarkably tragic dungeon theme that reflects how we begin to understand what will happen to Koholint island once we are successful.
The original 1993 version consisted solely of a synthesizer oscillating through various harmonies on a single, monophonic melodic line. From this, Nagamatsu transformed the material into a massive 10-part string orchestra that is gushing with emotion.
The harmony of the 1993 original is kept intact, and so the track begins in C minor (0:03) and quickly travels to the submediant key (6th degree; 0:06) of Ab major, followed quickly but subtly to the subdominant key (4th degree; 0:11) of F minor, and then back to C minor over a pedal of G (0:15), allowing for a final cadence of G major to C minor.
However, this cadence shifts surprisingly to an interrupted cadence, going from G major to Ab major 7th (Ab-C-Eb-G; 0:19), where we would otherwise have expected it to return to the tonic of C minor.
To further decorate these opening 4 bars, the harmony is enhanced with various yearning dissonances such as the augmented 4th (the D in the violas of b.2; 0:06) and major 7ths (the G in the 2nd violins of b.2; 0:06). These types of harrowing added-note dissonances persist throughout the entire track.
By 0:28, Nagamatsu introduces some faster string material in the 1st violins, now modulating to the relative major of Eb major by 0:32. Although briefly in a major key, the emotion is not that of happiness, but still tragedy, as Nagamatsu maintains various added-note dissonances such as the major 9th (the F in the violas of b.8; 0:32).
Towards the end of this phrase, we rest in the key of Ab major which acts harmonically as a Neapolitan 6th chord in the key of G minor (the flattened 2nd degree of G minor; Ab major) which pivots systematically to the dominant key of D major (0:41). At this time, we are also given a seamless clash of false relation tones; an F# against an F-natural (in the low strings and violin I respectively). This is another example of a brutally crushing dissonance that further enhances the tragic-ness of this theme.
At the end of the phrase (b.12; 0:49), we get yet another devastating dissonance of a minor 9th (G vs Ab; in the low strings and violin I respectively), further decorated by the violin Ibs piercing descent downwards as we return to the tonic of C minor (b.13; 0:54).
Now, the opening 12 bars of material repeats (0:54), now with the addition of the full synthesizer material heard in the 1993 original - a perfect celebration of original and remake - which blends beautifully with Nagamatsus new material.
The score was created in Sibelius 7.5, and the audio was created in Cubase using sample libraries from Vienna Symphonic and the Massive synthesizer.

Heres an orchestral arrangement Ive created of Sakurabas Airs Rock from Golden Sun.
➤ Analysis:
In this track, the tonal center is rather blurred. It would appear to be in F Lydian due to the 1st measure (0:02), though it could arguably also be E Phrygian with many phrases resolving into E (0:05). And then the final section takes place in E as well (1:11), with a lead in from A minor to B major.
In many of Sakurabas tracks, he uses a common 4/8-bar phrasing. However, in this track, there is an intriguing 6-bar phrase (0:02 - 0:21), disturbing the flow of expected phrasing which could be attributed to the unpredictability of the wind.
Whereas Magma Rock was dense and muddy, and Aqua Rock was bright and twinkling, Airs Rock is breathy and flowing. As such, Ive used an extensive amount of woodwind instruments, as well as a full choir with a treble soloist. The extended flute technique of percussive breaths was also used, to further enhance the breathy aesthetic. Strings only appear in the final section, as per the original.
The score was created in Sibelius 7.5, and the audio was created in Cubase using the brilliant EastWest sample libraries.
For the flute percussive breaths, I also used Carla Rees excellent free flute samples from her website: www.altoflute.co.uk

With the recent release of Zelda: Links Awakening HD, I wanted to tackle a few of the brilliantly orchestrated tracks, starting with the Overworld Theme (with its initial woodwind introduction).
➤ Analysis:
The Overworld Theme to Links Awakening has a few versions; this particular one that opens with woodwind fanfare is only played once after you first retrieve the sword from the beach. After that, this woodwind introduction is replaced by a string introduction (which I have included in the .PDF scores below).
To begin the analysis, this woodwind introduction begins glamorously with tertiary modulations from G major to Bb major to Db major (0:03), creating a remarkably triumphant sound. To get back to the tonic of G major from Db, a simple semitonal shift upward is used, getting us from Db major to D major. From there, a simple perfect cadence brings us back into G major.
The main string section opens with the familiar Zelda motif, which continues more or less identically to many of its previous renditions from other games. The first big change occurs at 0:33 where the original Zelda material suddenly melts into a chromatically descending legato passage which concludes in the tonic minor (G minor).
Following on is a brief section in Eb major (0:38) where the cello takes a solo role. But the 1st violin quickly returns to reclaim its solo role (0:44), repeating back to the previous harmonic founding of Eb major.
However, here the harmony modulates to Ab major rather than D minor (0:47). This rather sudden and extreme shift seems quite distant from the tonic of G major. So how do they resolve it? By using a cheeky Neapolitan 6th progression (Ab major to D major to G minor/major) which solves this harmonic problem seamlessly and with a lot more interest than a simple perfect cadence.
Sticking true to Nagamatsus philosophy of not having reverb in order to get the best sound quality out of the 3DS/Switch speakers, I have applied very little reverb here.
The score was created in Sibelius 7.5, and the audio was created in Cubase using sample libraries from Vienna Symphonic.
